Cape San Blas, Florida: The Best Beach for Families in 2026

If you’re looking for the best family beach in Florida in 2026, put Cape San Blas at the top of your list. Located along Florida’s Forgotten Coast near Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas combines soft white-sand beaches, calm bay waters, uncrowded stretches of shoreline, and plenty of outdoor adventures for families. We’ve visited Cape San Blas multiple times and stayed in beach homes here for four consecutive years, and it quickly became one of our favorite Florida beach destinations. Whether your family wants to spend the day swimming in the Gulf, exploring the calm waters of St. Joseph Bay, paddling, searching for shells, or simply relaxing on a beautiful beach without the crowds, Cape San Blas is a laid-back Florida getaway that still feels like a hidden gem in 2026

Florida’s Best Beach for Families

If you’re looking for the best family beach in Florida in 2026, put Cape San Blas near the top of your list.

Located on Florida’s Forgotten Coast near Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas is a long, narrow peninsula surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and St. Joseph Bay. You’ll find soft white sand, beautiful blue-green water, uncrowded beaches, wildlife, biking and hiking trails, kayaking, fishing, shelling, and plenty of room for kids to simply run and play.

And unlike some of Florida’s more developed beach destinations, Cape San Blas still feels relaxed.

There are no towering oceanfront resorts dominating the shoreline. Instead, you’ll find vacation homes, small businesses, nature preserves, state park beaches, and long stretches of sand where it’s possible to spread out and enjoy a slower family vacation.

We were first introduced to Cape San Blas by friends from Georgia who visit some of Florida’s best beaches several times a year. After spending time here ourselves—and eventually staying in a beach house for four years in a row—we understood why they kept coming back.

Cape San Blas became one of our favorite family beach destinations in Florida.

Here’s everything you need to know before planning your Cape San Blas vacation in 2026.

Why We Love Cape San Blas for a Family Vacation

Cape San Blas checks so many boxes for families.

The beaches are beautiful, but the real magic is that you can build your vacation around what your family actually enjoys.

Want to spend all day swimming and playing in the sand? You can.

Want calmer water for younger kids? Head toward St. Joseph Bay.

Want to kayak, paddleboard, bike, fish, search for shells, or explore nature? There are plenty of opportunities.

Want to eat fresh seafood and ice cream after a day at the beach? Absolutely.

And if your idea of a perfect vacation is doing almost nothing except watching the sunset, Cape San Blas is pretty great for that, too.

Cape San Blas is also one of the more dog-friendly beach destinations in Florida. Dogs are allowed on public Gulf County beaches as long as they remain leashed, although pets are not permitted on the beach at T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park.

The Beaches of Cape San Blas

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive is the sand.

Cape San Blas is known for its soft, white sand and clear water, and the peninsula gives families plenty of opportunities to find a beach access that works for them.

On the Gulf side, the water and waves make for classic Florida beach days.

This is where our kids have spent hours throwing footballs, playing frisbee, building sandcastles, swimming, searching for shells, and flying kites.

There is something wonderfully simple about a Cape San Blas beach day.

Put out the beach chairs. Set up some shade. Stock the cooler. Let the kids loose.

The beaches can feel remarkably uncrowded compared with some of Florida’s more famous beach towns, which is a huge part of the appeal for families. Visit Florida describes Cape San Blas as a secluded destination with long stretches of white sand and relatively little of the resort-town atmosphere found elsewhere along the Panhandle.

A note about Cape San Blas beach restoration in 2026

If you are visiting Cape San Blas during 2026, check local conditions before your trip.

A major beach restoration project is underway on the peninsula, including beach nourishment and construction intended to address long-term erosion. Current project updates indicate that construction began in March 2026, so conditions and access can change as work progresses.

That doesn’t mean you should skip Cape San Blas. It simply means this is one of those destinations where checking current local information shortly before your trip is especially important.

Visit T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

One of the highlights of a Cape San Blas vacation is T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park.

The park sits at the end of the peninsula and protects an extraordinary stretch of beach, dunes, bay shoreline, and wildlife habitat.

The park was named the nation's No. 1 beach by Dr. Beach in 2002. Because beaches that receive the top ranking are not eligible to be ranked No. 1 again, the park remains one of those special places with a permanent spot in beach history.

Today, visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, shelling, snorkeling, paddling, boating, hiking, biking, picnicking, birding, and wildlife watching.

The park is open 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year, and the current entrance fee is $6 per vehicle for up to eight people.

The dunes are spectacular

The dunes are one of the reasons this area feels so different from a typical Florida beach town.

The state park protects some of the tallest intact dunes in the Florida Panhandle, along with important habitat for shorebirds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.

Please stay off the dunes and give nesting birds and sea turtle nests plenty of space.

There are no lifeguards, so use good judgment when swimming and keep a close eye on children. Gulf conditions can change with wind, tides, and weather.

Explore St. Joseph Bay

One of our favorite things about Cape San Blas is that you get two very different water experiences.

The Gulf side gives you the traditional beach vacation.

The bay side gives you calmer water and a completely different kind of adventure.

St. Joseph Bay is a wonderful place to kayak, paddleboard, snorkel, look for marine life, and explore with kids. The shallow water can be especially appealing for families with younger children, although conditions and water depth can change with tides and weather.

Bring a kayak or paddleboard—or rent one locally—and spend a morning exploring the bay.

You may see crabs, shells, fish, birds, and other wildlife along the way.

If your kids love collecting treasures, give them a bucket and let them explore the shoreline.

Just remember that living creatures belong in the water. Look, learn, and leave wildlife where you find it.

Go Biking on Loggerhead Run Bike Path

Bring the bikes!

The Loggerhead Run Bike Path is an approximately eight-mile paved trail that runs along Cape San Blas and provides an easy way to explore the peninsula without spending the entire day in the car.

This is one of the updates I would definitely make to older versions of this article: the trail is longer than the five-mile figure we originally published.

Biking is a great family activity here because you can turn around whenever the little legs—or big legs—have had enough.

Bring scooters, bikes, running shoes, or whatever your family enjoys using on a paved trail.

E-bikes are also permitted on the Loggerhead Run Bike Path according to Gulf County.

Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

If your family likes being on the water, bring your paddleboards.

We have traveled with inflatable paddleboards many times, and Cape San Blas is exactly the kind of place where having your own watercraft can be fun because you can head out whenever the weather and water conditions cooperate.

A large, stable inflatable SUP can also be a fun option for families.

If you don’t have your own equipment, rentals are available in the area. The state park's concession services include kayaks, canoes, bicycles, and beach equipment.

For younger kids or beginners, start with the calmer bay water rather than assuming Gulf conditions will be equally easy.

Go Shelling and Look for Sea Life

Bring the buckets.

Cape San Blas is a fantastic place for kids who love discovering things in nature.

On the bay side especially, you can spend hours looking for shells and observing small marine creatures.

Depending on conditions, you may find hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, sand dollars, and other fascinating creatures.

This is one of those Cape San Blas activities that costs almost nothing but can keep kids entertained for hours.

Just remember that wildlife should be handled gently—or better yet, observed without picking it up—and shells containing living animals should be left alone.

Look for Wildlife

Cape San Blas isn't just about the beach.

The peninsula is an important wildlife habitat, and St. Joseph Peninsula State Park protects nesting beaches and other sensitive coastal ecosystems.

Sea turtles nest on the beaches during the summer months, and the park provides habitat for threatened and endangered species including snowy plovers and the St. Andrew beach mouse.

If you're visiting during nesting season, be especially careful after dark.

Keep your distance from wildlife, don't disturb nests, and follow posted beach regulations.

For kids, this can turn an ordinary beach vacation into a fantastic outdoor-learning experience.

What to Eat in Cape San Blas

Eventually, every beach day turns into a food question.

Luckily, there are plenty of casual places to eat around Cape San Blas and nearby Port St. Joe.

Indian Pass Raw Bar

One of our favorite food stops in the area is Indian Pass Raw Bar.

It's a short drive from Cape San Blas and has the kind of relaxed, casual atmosphere that fits this part of Florida perfectly.

We loved the seafood enough that we typically went more than once during a visit.

Oysters, shrimp, crab, and other seafood make this a fun stop when you want something distinctly local.

Pizza and family-friendly options

When everyone is ready for something other than seafood, look toward Port St. Joe for additional restaurants and family-friendly options.

One of our longtime favorites was Joe Mama's Wood Fired Pizza.

Cape San Blas and Port St. Joe also have casual breakfast spots, sandwich shops, ice cream, and other easy family options.

Because restaurants and businesses can change over time, I recommend checking current hours and menus before you go rather than relying on an older travel guide.

Buy Fresh Seafood and Cook at Your Beach House

This is one of my favorite Cape San Blas vacation traditions.

If you're staying in a vacation rental with a kitchen, buy fresh local seafood and have your own beach-house feast.

Fresh shrimp makes an easy family dinner, and cooking at your rental can also save money compared with eating every meal at a restaurant.

Stock up before heading down the Cape

One important Cape San Blas tip hasn't changed:

Do your major grocery shopping before you get too far down the peninsula.

There are smaller stores and trading posts for essentials, but you shouldn't expect the same grocery selection you'd find in a larger town.

Port St. Joe is a good place to stock up before settling into your rental.

coneheads-cape-san-blas

Don't Forget Ice Cream

Because what's a Florida family vacation without ice cream?

One of our favorite casual stops has always been Coneheads.

It's an easy place to grab something cold after a hot afternoon at the beach, and they also serve meals if your family needs more than dessert.

fire-cape-san-blas-beach

Spend a Night Looking for Crabs

One of our favorite Cape San Blas traditions is nighttime crabbing.

After dinner, grab your flashlight, net, and bucket and head toward the beach.

The experience is part adventure, part treasure hunt, and part excuse to stay up later than usual.

And if your family is lucky enough to see bioluminescence in the water, it can be an unforgettable experience.

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and isn't something you can reliably schedule, so think of it as a bonus rather than an attraction to plan your vacation around.

Can You Have a Beach Bonfire on Cape San Blas?

Beach fires are allowed in some areas of Cape San Blas, but rules and permitted locations matter, so check the current local regulations before lighting one.

If fires are permitted where you're staying, use local firewood rather than transporting firewood from home.

A beach fire followed by s'mores can be an incredible way to finish a family beach day—but never leave a fire unattended and make sure it is fully extinguished before leaving.

Where to Stay in Cape San Blas

One of the reasons we love Cape San Blas is the vacation-home setup.

Instead of a wall of high-rise resorts, you'll find many single-family vacation rentals and smaller accommodations.

For families, a vacation home can make a huge difference.

Having a kitchen means you can make breakfast before heading to the beach, pack lunches, and cook some of the fresh seafood you find locally.

A private outdoor space or pool can also give everyone something to do when you've had enough sun for the day.

Not sure which Cape San Blas rental or location is right for your family? I can help you sort through the options and plan a Cape San Blas getaway that fits your family's travel style.

Gulf-side vs. bay-side rentals

If you want the classic Cape San Blas experience, look for a Gulf-side rental.

You'll have easy access to the beach and those spectacular sunset views.

Bay-side rentals offer something different: quieter water, beautiful views, and easy access to paddling and exploring.

Neither is necessarily better.

It depends on what your family wants to do most.

Find lots of beach front rentals on this Florida cape

You WILL find Cape San Blas beach front rentals just within steps of the beach, either directly on the beach, or just one or two homes back.

On the bay side of this Florida cape, Cape San Blas vacation rentals offer fantastic serene, nature filled views and maybe a boat dock.

PRO TIP: The five mile paved walking / biking trail is perfect for families and helps you explore the peninsula in a different way.

Camping at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Camping at the state park has changed significantly since our original visit, so don't rely on older information saying the campground is closed.

As of 2026, overnight options include the 46-site Shady Pines Campground, eight cabins, and 14 primitive campsites in the Wilderness Preserve.

The Shady Pines campground includes standard sites and tent-only sites, with water and electricity and new bathhouse facilities.

The eight park cabins are another option for families who want to stay inside the park without bringing camping equipment. The cabins sleep up to six people and overlook St. Joseph Bay.

The 14 primitive campsites in the Wilderness Preserve are a completely different experience. They are pack-in, pack-out sites with no water or electricity, and a wilderness permit is required.

For most families traveling with younger kids, the regular campground or cabins will be the easier choice.

Take a Day Trip to Apalachicola

If you want to spend a day away from the sand, head east to Apalachicola.

This historic coastal town is a fun change of pace, with local shops, restaurants, history, and a distinctly different atmosphere from Cape San Blas.

You can also explore the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve near Eastpoint and learn more about the coastal ecosystems surrounding the area.

It's a good choice for a cloudy beach day or for families who simply want to explore somewhere new.

Visit St. George Island

Another excellent day trip is St. George Island.

If your family brought bikes, take them along and explore the island.

It's another beautiful Gulf Coast destination, but the change of scenery makes it feel like a completely different adventure.

You can easily turn a Cape San Blas vacation into a larger Forgotten Coast road trip by adding Apalachicola, St. George Island, and Port St. Joe.

Cape San Blas With Dogs

If you don't want to leave your dog at home, Cape San Blas is worth considering.

Gulf County allows dogs on its public beaches, with the important exception of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park and certain other restricted areas. Dogs must remain on a leash.

Always check the specific beach access you're using before letting your dog onto the sand.

And please bring waste bags and clean up after your pet.

Is Cape San Blas Worth Visiting in 2026?

Yes.

If you're looking for a Florida beach vacation that feels more relaxed and natural than the major resort destinations, Cape San Blas is still one of our favorite choices.

It's particularly good for families because you can combine several different kinds of vacation in one place:

  • White-sand Gulf beaches

  • Calm bay-water adventures

  • Swimming and snorkeling

  • Kayaking and paddleboarding

  • Shelling and wildlife watching

  • Biking on the Loggerhead Run Bike Path

  • Fishing and boating

  • State park adventures

  • Casual seafood restaurants

  • Vacation-home living

  • Dog-friendly public beaches

  • Easy day trips to Apalachicola and St. George Island

The Cape also gives you something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find at popular Florida beaches: space.

You don't have to fill every hour of your vacation.

Some days can be spent paddling across the bay. Some can be spent riding bikes. Some can be spent exploring the state park.

And some days?

You can put your toes in the sand, hand the kids a football, open a book, and stay there until sunset. We also love the super portable, lightweight Eno Lounger SL Chairs (3.5 pounds each) for the beach. We use them all the time, for beaches, camping, and soccer games.

Bring your own paddleboards so you can use them every day from sunrise to sunset.

Cape San Blas, Florida: Quick Planning Tips for 2026

Before you go, here are the things I'd put at the top of your checklist:

Book your rental early. Popular family-friendly beach houses can fill quickly, especially during school breaks and summer.

Check current beach conditions. Cape San Blas is undergoing major restoration work in 2026, so construction and beach access can change.

Shop for groceries in Port St. Joe. Don't count on the small stores on the peninsula for a full grocery run.

Bring bikes. The eight-mile Loggerhead Run Bike Path is one of the easiest ways to explore Cape San Blas.

Bring plenty of sun protection. Shade, hats, sunscreen, and rash guards can make a huge difference with kids.

Pack water shoes and beach gear. You'll use them constantly.

Reserve state park camping or cabins ahead of time. Overnight options are available, but availability can be limited.

Follow wildlife rules. Sea turtles and shorebirds depend on these beaches, so stay away from nests and sensitive dune areas.

Don't assume Gulf water is always calm. Wind, tides, storms, and offshore conditions can change swimming conditions quickly.

Bring your dog if you want—but check beach rules first. Public Gulf County beaches are dog-friendly, while the state park beach is not.

Final Thoughts: Is Cape San Blas the Best Family Beach in Florida?

Obviously, "best" is subjective.

Florida has an incredible number of beautiful beaches, and every family has different priorities.

But after visiting Cape San Blas repeatedly and staying here for four consecutive years, we can tell you why this one keeps bringing us back.

It's beautiful without feeling overly developed.

cape san blas in florida

It's adventurous without requiring a packed itinerary.

It's family-friendly without being boring for adults.

And it still has that rare feeling of discovering a place that hasn't been completely taken over by crowds and high-rise resorts.

For our family, Cape San Blas is one of the best family beaches in Florida—and in 2026, it remains a place we'd happily return to again.

If your perfect Florida vacation includes white sand, warm Gulf water, outdoor adventures, fresh seafood, wildlife, and plenty of time to simply relax together, Cape San Blas belongs on your list.
