Winter time family vacations over the Christmas holidays are an ideal time for us to reconnect and reset with our kids, especially as they get older and busier.

Life with teens fills up the family calendar, but most extra-curricular activities hit snooze over Christmas break.

This is exactly why we vacationed in Cozumel one December. Our kids still talk abou that fabulously warm and sunny Christmas break snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea and relaxing at the pool.

Keep reading to find out why Cozumel and Belize are some of the best family winter vacations.

Aruba

flamingo-beach-aruba

Aruba, perfectly located in the Southern Caribbean, is a popular destination year round.

However, this popular cruise port destination has something special going on during the holiday season and in particular at Christmas. Throughout the year, the tropical climate results in amazing weather and hours of sunshine, meaning an escape from the cold winter weather of the north.

The lighting of pagaga or firecrackers on the streets of the main centres during Christmas and on the days leading up to New Years is a sought-after tradition that should not be missed at this time of the year. The smoke is believed to chase away evil spirits and adds to the already festive holiday atmosphere.

Every restaurant and resort throws a special Christmas event, with many booked out in advance so do be sure to book your preference ahead of time. With beautiful beaches such as Palm, Eagle, and Flamingo Beach Aruba, any thoughts of a white Christmas are quickly forgotten.

A visit to Arikok National Park and a swim in the natural pools also comes highly recommended.

Stay in one of the many luxurious beachfront vacation homes. Getting to the island is simple enough with frequent nonstop or single-connection flights from all major cities around the world.

Banff National Park, Canada

lake-louise-banff-canada-winter

Christmas in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies is one of the best places to spend the holidays in North America.

Winter in the mountains is not a high peak season like the summer months, which makes it nice and easy to explore the resort town, participate in seasonal events, or just enjoy a slow vacation.

Starting in November, Banff is decorated in festive cheer. The popular Sulphur Mountain Sightseeing gondola is the best spot to be in. The snow-covered mountains and the red and green decor will impress you.

Families or couples can take pictures with Santa Claus, and even check out the constellations at night. There is a SkyBistro located in the gondola area, and they serve a seasonal menu to warm up your belly.

Banff National Park is also an outdoors paradise. Snowshoeing and winter hiking are popular activities in the Rockies. Keep in mind that not all the trails will be open in the winter, so check before you start for the hike.

Lake Louise is located about 50 minutes from Banff, and the Ski Resort there is a great spot for cross country skiers.

The best way to reach Banff National Park is to fly to Calgary, which is the nearest international airport, and then drive from Calgary to Banff town. It takes about 1.50 hours to get there.

The top places to stay in Banff National Park are Fairmont Banff Springs and Elk + Avenue hotel

Belize

Warm Christmas vacation in Belize

When you’re looking for a warm vacation getaway without much jet-lag, Belize in the Central Time Zone is the hottest way to go.

Our family of six absolutely loved Belize over Christmas vacation last December. We often talk of returning!

While found in Central America, purists label Belize part of North America. Just a 4.5 hour non-stop flight from Denver will put you in Belize City and from there our adventure began.

This epic winter vacation does not disappoint. Explore ruins, caves, and snorkel or scuba along the Belize Barrier Reef — then book a kayaking excursion around the islands.

All the ancient Mayan sites in Belize are managed by the Institute of Archaeology and have interpretive centers, as well as trained guides to show you around. From Caracol and Cerros to Lamanai and little villages and forest areas — you’ll find Mayan ruins.

We loved snorkeling in Ambergris Caye with our kids!

We made a bee line to the island of Ambergris Caye. Known for fishing and coconuts, more recently, ecotourism has grown here with scuba diving and snorkeling.

Belize ranks up there for fabulous snorkeling. We even kayaked right from our San Pedro beach condo, just 5 minutes from fantastic coral and colorful fish!

Our family of six soaked up sunshine and beach time in between fishing and snorkeling trips. We chose to save cave tubing, jungle stays, and mayan ruins for another time.

Once called the British Honduras, Belize is an English speaking country.

The beautiful beaches are covered in waving palm trees and colorful sunsets. And the weather is perfect.

Grab your swim suit and snorkel gear, here’s everything you need to know for flying to Ambergris Caye for your Belize family vacation.

Half Moon Caye, Shark Ray Alley, and Hol Chan Marine Reserve are just a few colorful places for excellent snorkeling.

Opt in for hiking, fishing, horseback riding, sailing, and more and you can see why Belize is great for families for families like ours who love outdoor adventures.

Average December temperatures in Belize range from a low of 71°F to a high of 80°F. The days tend to be quite mild and the nights cool, the perfect weather for a warm Christmas vacation in the tropics.

Key West, Florida USA

Key-west-florida-by-kylie

A great place to visit in North America during Christmas time is Key West in the Florida Keys! During December, the island is covered with Holiday decorations, from houses to Christmas trees made from sea related things such as buoys and crab pots.

They also hold an annual lighted boat parade! While some of the north regions of North America are freezing cold during the winter months, the Florida Keys are warm and sunny. Key West is closer to Cuba than what it is to Miami!

December also marks the end of hurricane season too, so it’s a perfect time to visit. It’s warm enough to be able to enjoy water based activities such as snorkelling or take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas National Park.

The quickest way to get to Key West is to fly direct into Key West airport. Alternatively, a fun option is to fly into Miami and then road trip the Florida Keys to Key West, with a journey time of approximately 3.5 hours.

There are also fun places to visit on route, such as the Turtle Hospital in Marathon or Boondocks Mini Golf on Ramrod Key.

The best place to stay is the Ibis Bay Resort. This bright, colorful hotel has a swimming pool, private beach, free shark feeding, turtles and a resident parrot! There’s also a free shuttle bus into the downtown area.

Head to the Florida Keys is one of the best winter vacations in USA — also spectacular for spring break!

Moreover, the excellent weather conditions (daily maximums are around 65 degrees Fahrenheit) will allow you to enjoy the outdoors as much as the indoors.

For decorations, head to Balboa Island.  Residents do not skimp when it comes to embellishing their gorgeous mansions. A walk around the island’s perimeter (Bay Front) and Marina Avenue will leave you pleasantly surprised.  And, you may encounter a sandman, Southern California’s snowman cousin.

Newport-Beach-california-by-Tanama-Tales

Newport Beach hosts one of the most notorious boat parades in the United States.  For five nights, over 100 boats display lights and ornaments at the rhythm of cheerful music. The season is kicked off at the Balboa Funk Zone with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, carolers, cookies, and more.

In addition, the Corona del Mar neighborhood hosts Christmas walks featuring food, games, vendors, and live music.

The Fashion Island shopping complex installs a giant Christmas tree and over-the-top decorations.  It is a great place to find photo opportunities.

Don’t miss the free five-minute sound and light show on the façade of Saks Fifth avenue opposite the Rockefeller tree, which plays through the evening all season. Kids will also love the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Gardens.

Other holiday shows not to miss are the annual performance of Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet and the iconic Rockettes (and Santa) at the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.

Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico

oaxaca-mexico-christmas

Oaxaca de Juarez, the capital of the Mexican province of Oaxaca, is a perfect place to visit during the holiday season. The small city is easy to get to via Mexico City, only 5 hours drive or a one hour flight.

Oaxaca during Christmas is a destination with multi day celebrations taking place outdoors. Temperatures are comfortable in the 70s during the day, going down to 50 at night.

The most unique part of the celebration is Noche de Los Rabanos, or Night of the Radishes. This is a festival that takes place every year on December 23rd. Carving radishes into figurines started out as a way to attract buyers to the Christmas markets but in time, this event transformed into an annual competition, with the city dedicating land to grow the oversized radishes.

Other things to do in Oaxaca on a family winter vacation include visiting the Zocalo (main square), and many churches. There are also many artisanal villages where you can see how handicrafts are made, and the famous archaeological ruins of Monte Alban. If you're traveling to Oaxaca, try staying at the Casona del Llano.

Pro Tip: If you want to see the amazing sculptures carved out of radishes, prepare to get in line early in the day, as the event only lasts a few hours!

Aim for a cozy bungalow or a luxurious penthouse apartment to amp up your stay in Oaxaca.

With so many things to do outside, Salt Lake City is one of the best winter vacations in USA.

Sedona, Arizona USA

sedona-arizona-for-christmas

The quiet desert town of Sedona, Arizona is one of the most magical places to visit during Christmas time and on a family winter vacation.

The color of the region itself is festive with bright red geological formations speckled with dark green cyprus, juniper, and oak trees. Cacti act as the ornaments. Some visitors believe that the area is home to vortexes, a source of positive energy radiating from the earth.

There are tens of hiking and mountain biking trails to discover, making it family-friendly holiday destination for kids who love adventure. Kids of all ages will love scrambling for rocks, searching for wildlife, and enjoying plenty of space to themselves.

While the weather tends to be a bit chilly in December, it rarely rains in this desert landscape. A can’t miss experience? Hiking to the top of Cathedral Rock to enjoy the sunset. Watch as the sun casts shadows over a verdant valley below and changes the red rock walls from amber to deep maroon.

The best way to get to Sedona is to fly into Sedona Oak Creek Airport. Check into Enchantment Resort, a luxury retreat that hosts guided hikes, has multiple indoor and outdoor pools, and spacious family-friendly rooms. Kids aged 4 to 12 can take part in Camp Coyote, a program where kids can enjoy nature walks, art projects, and cooking classes.

Sun Valley, Idaho USA

Sun Valley is a small ski town in eastern Idaho and in the month of December it looks like a page out of a winter wonderland storybook. There are a number of great things to do in Sun Valley

Skiing on Bald Mountain is one of the main winter highlights. There is more than 3,000 feet of consistent fall line skiing.

Nordic skiing, fat tire biking, snowmobiling, horse-drawn sleigh rides and ice-skating are other fun winter activities in Sun Valley while on a family winter vacation.

There are a number of holiday events in Sun Valley each year in December. The famous Wood River Orchestra holds a free holiday concert about a week before Christmas. Toronto, Canada

toronto-christmas-vacation

The city is decked in Christmas cheer, and the streets are filled with holiday shoppers. Kids can't wait to see Santa at Eaton Centre or meet Rudolph at the Canadian National Exhibition.

Toronto's rich culture offers many traditional celebrations that make this time of year so unique. Get your fill of caroling, cookies and hot cocoa, gingerbread house-building workshops and cookie decorating classes.

A visit to Toronto's beautiful Harbourfront Centre means skating on an outdoor rink with the city skyline in view. Other family activities include scavenger hunts, arts and crafts lessons, and skating lessons are also available.

The weather during the holiday season is chilly and can be quite snowy, so you'll want to bundle up when outdoors. When visiting in December, the number one piece of advice is to pack warm clothing because Toronto gets colder than most other places at this time of year.

Other things to do in Toronto include visiting museums and galleries, such as the Royal Ontario Museum and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Arts, a camp for kids. You can also stop by the Ontario Science Centre, which has a planetarium and IMAX theatre.

You can get to Toronto by plane, train or bus from several cities in North America.

The best luxury place to stay with kids in Toronto is probably the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Or aim for the Chelsea Hotel, which offers a kids club with crafts and computer games. There's a pool with a waterslide and lounge for teens with XBOX, ping pong table, air hockey, and touch screen computers.
